New York: (February 10, 2008)
The Cheryl McGinnis Gallery is very proud to exhibit Touched by Women’s Hands. This exhibit was conceived and curated for Flushing Council of the Arts, Smithsonian by artist/curator Lin Yan. The Cheryl McGinnis Gallery was so taken by the power of this exhibit that we felt compelled to exhibit it in March to honor Women’s History Month. Lin Yan did not include her own work in the original exhibition, however, this gallery felt strongly that her work should be included.
The exhibit focuses on using age-old methods, traditional materials and objects found in nature, the artists give substance to their dreams and imaginings, making a connection with the natural world. Their work is in contrast to male artists in China who usually have several assistants to help in the creation of their art.
Contemporary Chinese art has become hot in the global art market. While technology plays an important part in the trendy art scene, there is a small but strong group of Chinese women artists in New York who create their art differently – with their own hands.
Nature is a key element in the Touched by Women’s Hands exhibition. The rules of nature appear in a multitude of ways, speaking passionately with visual impact but with a contemporary touch that is both subtle and natural.
